Take Note, All The Time

Check out my previous post Focus on Facts: Schule for a generalized post on school tips

Like I said I would in my previous post, I am posting about my note taking system. In this post, I'll be going more in depth on my method of taking notes. In the previous post, I lightly touched up on it, but I'll be describing exactly what I do here.
Here listed in subsections are some things I do and think are necessary for good notes. I will also have some good note taking skills.

CONSISTENCY
When taking notes, you want to come up with a consistent system. Each new section should be clearly set apart so it can be easily found for reviewing purposes and for organizational purposes. Start each new section of notes with "Notes:" followed by a clear title of what it is about and the date. I also underline "Notes:" with pink so it stands out.
Use the same symbols and colors for each thing. For every new vocabulary word I write down, I write its definition and I highlight the word in yellow. So, if I am looking for the definition of a word, I can look at all the yellow highlighted words and see it quicker because you associate yellow with the vocabulary. Any time I make a T-chart or some sort of list, I underline the sub-titles with blue. Other important little tid-bits I want to stand out I underline with orange. Try different combos of colors to see which land on your eye the best. Symbols I use include astrics (*) or stars around things that I don't think are orange-highlight worthy, but are still worth marking. I also often use arrows to connect similar ideas that aren't right next to each other.
Though this one is harder to figure out, find a writing method to keep consistent throughout your notes. Yeah, that doesn't really make sense, but I find it useful. By using the same writing style, you'll be able to find things in your notes because you'll know your own pattern. That probably still doesn't make sense... I don't really know how to explain it, but write with your note taking voice, you know? Like how you have your formal writing voice, personal narrative voice, texting voice, and such; you can also have a note taking voice. I dunno how to explain this, but if you are a person who likes to write, you'll somewhat understand.

TAKE NOTES
Even when you don't have to, I really suggest that you take notes. For one, it is a great skill to have. I also find it helpful to write things down. When I write things down in notes, I find it easier to remember them for a test. During a test, if I am thinking of an answer and I had written it down, I think of how the word looked when I wrote it. Or, if I am thinking of the answer to a chart I wrote down, I think of the colors I used and how the chart was written. It's a weird way to try and remember things, but I really do think it works.
In some classes your teachers may say that you don't have to take notes, but even if you 'don't have to', I really urge that you do anyway. Like I just stated, writing things down can be a good way to get facts into your head. Back in elementary, if you got a bad score on a spelling test, you would have to write the word repetitively on a sheet of paper. I think it is partly the repetition that gets it ingrained. Not only are you hearing your instructor say whatever it is you are learning, you're also probably seeing it on the board, and you would also then be writing it down. And, having something to look back on and study is helpful as well. Taking good notes also requires at least a smidgen of organizational skills which can come in handy pretty much throughout your entire life.

INCLUDE IMAGES
Things other than words to put in your notes would be charts, graphs, and diagrams. Having visual things to look at other than words can be helpful to remember things. Drawing a timeline of events instead of listing them out can be an easy way to incorporate images into your note taking. Including little drawings of confusing descriptions of things, like transcription in DNA replication and such, can also help change up the way you take notes for the better. Pictures can also add to what you already have just for memorizing purposes. If I think of a little analogy that I can easily draw while taking notes, I usually doodle it down. Instead of writing down the statistics of something, you could just as easily draw a graph with the numbers to add a visual that will stick better in your mind. There are plenty of different ideas you can try to vary your notes with images.

Here's a pic of some notes I have taken:
Main thing I have to say is make sure the most important things stand out and use charts and tables. Underline, astric, highlight, do what you need to so you can easily spot important information.
I really hope this helped some of you take notes of give you ideas on better note taking strategies. If I left anything out, just hit me up in the comments and I'll be sure to touch up on it!

Carousel Pastel Laquor

There is a unicorn!!

On Pinterest (you can follow me on Pinterest here), I saw a similar nail art design, and I was intrigued. The colors weren't quite to my liking, so I changed it to my taste. I have plenty of pastel and light Essie nail colors, so I decided for a carnival-y scheme. Ha, one day I'm dark-grunge (Shady Arcade) and the next I'm carousel-pastel. You never know with me; my fashion taste varies.
Every color I used was Essie except for the white, which was part of  a Kiss Nail Art kit that included thin-brushed nail colors. The colors I used were: Mint Candy Apple, Bikini So Teeny, Muchi Muchi, Fashion Playground, Go Ginza, and the white. The design was super easy, so I felt it wasn't necessary for a picture or video tutorial. I really need to post a video sometime though.
Comment on the colors you'd prefer to use for this design and if I should actually post a video in my lifetime.

All That Glitters Leaves a Mess

DIY: Glittery Flag Banner

*When I made this, I didn't know that these 'flags' were a type of bunting, so  throughout the post I refer to this bunting as 'flag banner' or 'flags', so, just as a heads up!!*

I meant to make a photo step-by-step thing, but I forgot to take the rest of the pictures, so... I'll show the pictures I did take and just explain thoroughly the rest of the directions to your own glittery mess!
Before I begin, I'll explain what this is. What I made is just a little flag banner strung across my closet doors. On my closet doors is also a Big Time Rush poster, and I had hoped on getting more posters for those closet doors of mine, but I haven't found any other posters I've wanted to post. My closets were just a giant, blank space waiting for creativity to throw up on it. For awhile I have been wanting a flag banner for my closet, and I had planned on buying one. But, on a snow day, I decided to go ahead and make one myself. I already had some burlap lying about, so I went from there. The glitter was actually an after-the-fact thing. At first, I had just planned on painting the the numbers with gold and silver paint, but then I was like, "Hey, I also have gold and silver glitter!" The messier the better, right? It's actually not too bad, glitter doesn't shed every time I open the doors, thankfully.
Aight, here is the partly pictured tutorial to your very own glittery flag banner!!

1. Gather Yo Materials

When gathering those materials of yours, choose your paints wisely. I did pastel colors to go with the decor of my room. I've seen these banners done to circus schemes and plenty of other themes as well.; you can choose whatever colors, but just make sure they work with where you'll be putting it. Also, make sure you have enough of the paints! The one thing you don't need when doing a project is to run out of materials!! ESPECIALLY paint! Just the thought makes me sad... Oh, and also part of step one, get your work space together.
The actual materials you'll be needing are the following:
  • scissors
  • marker
  • sheet of thick paper (construction paper or card stock)
  • a couple yards of printed burlap
  • paint of whatever colors you choose (have enough of it!)
  • large paint brush
  • medium paint brushes for detailing (numbers)
  • glitter matching the detailing
  • yarn
  • Command hooks (or tape)

2. Cut Up That Burlap

Before you will be able to cut the burlap, you will need a stencil. Well, I did. The stencil will help all of your flag triangles be the same size. I used a sheet of notebook paper because I messed up on my card stock and didn't want to waste any more :P You will be able to use this stencil to keep all the flags the same size, and could be used for a later project possibly.

3. Painting Triangles
As soon as your sheering is done, get to painting! This is probably longest part, because burlap is pretty difficult to paint with most craft paints. It will take several coats to get the color very visible. You can keep on painting to get desired color. You'll want to paint in strokes side-to-side and up and down. Also, when you wash your brush out in between colors, dry the brush very well! If you paint with a wet brush on burlap, the color looks awful.

4. Detailing
Once the flags are COMPLETELY dry, you can start on the details. On my burlap, the little details were the printed numbers. Whatever your little deets may be, go ahead and paint them your other paint color. I used gold and silver for the numbers. Every other flag had gold, and every other had silver. I used a medium-sized brush to paint these numbers.

5. Glitter, Glitter Everywhere
As soon as you are done painting the numbers, get to the glitter. If not, the glitter won't stick to the dried numbers or what have you. Pat the glitter down on top of the detail then shake off the excess.  Do this for each flag. Once you think that they are dried, shake each flag again to make sure you have rid yourself of most of the excess glitter.

6. Pulling It All Together
Using yarn and a yarn needle, string all of the flags together. The needle should be able to easily pass through the burlap. Make sure there is enough yarn at each end to be able to tie it up.

7. Hanging It Up

For putting the banner up, you can use tape or command hooks. I used the hooks because I know it won't fall. My banner was hung across my closet doors so I had to use four hooks because the doors open. Most of you should only need two hooks.

You now have a finished product!!

I plan on making more DIY posts, hopefully. I really need to get on top of things and actually post what I say I'm going to post!! This post took awhile to construct, so I hope you guys enjoyed it :) Oh, and if any of you actually make one of these, talk about it in the comments! Tell me if this post was helpful in making one yourself. And, again, sorry for the lack of pictures.

What to Listen To: CD Spree

Does anyone even buy CD's anymore?

If I really like an artist, I purchase the hard copy of their music: the compact disc. I am obsessed with obtaining the discs of all my favorite groups/artists. I've already posted about my CD purchases (The Poet's Laughter Lines), but these are new CD's and new musics. I recently bought CD's from the Arctic Monkeys, Eminem, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, and Taylor Swift. Kinda random, but so is my taste in music. I've had lots of difference influence in music from my mom, dad, brothers, and friends. I like having lots of variety when I listen to music when I run or do whatever, 'cause I listen to music pretty much whenever I am able. Now, with my new iPod (yes, I know, finally!!), I've been getting a whole bunch of new music to load onto it. After I lost all of my digital music due to my computer hard drive breaking, I've been even more interested in physical music. Now, if I do my research, I'm sure there is some way for me to recover my lost archives, but as of right now I'm good with my CD play and stack of discs.
Music discs are just so cool. I love having stacks of them on my shelf. They look so pretty sitting there. Of course, it is nice to have music on the go whenever you want with an iPod; in fact, it is lovely for that mobility. But, when I am home cleaning or cooking, I like listening to CD's on my ten dollar CD player. It may seem stupid and old to still buy CD's, but it is something I plan on continuing. Some people collect movie DVDs or cassette tapes, I have my CD's.

To the content of the discs now. Okay, first of all, I didn't get all these in one sitting. It was a spread out spree, don't worry. All of these artists are ones that I like or are starting to like. Lana Del Rey and Lorde are what I started this spree with. After hearing them on Pandora, I wanted them for myself. Sadly, not all of the songs I wanted were on the discs, so I'll have to go back and get their other albums. I then purchased the Arctic Monkeys and Taylor Swift. One day I heard "Do I Wanna Know?" by the Arctic Monkeys on the radio in the car, and I new I just had to have the CD. Both me and my mother like the song "Blank Space" by Taylor, so we grabbed that, too, while we were at it. Lastly, I got myself some Eminem. Me, my cousin, and my brother were at Walmart getting some limes when we stumbled upon the $5 CD bin. After tossing aside Tween Hits and other poor discs, I finally found something worth looking for: The Eminem Show CD. All of these were in the span of about a few weeks, and now I've decided to blog about them.

Here are my favorite songs by those artists:
  • Arctic Monkeys- Do I Wanna Know? R U Mine?
  • Lana Del Rey- Off to the Races, Million Dollar Man
  • Lorde- A World Alone, White Teeth Teens
  • Eminem- 'Till I Collapse, Hailie's Song
  • Taylor Swift- Blank Space, Welcome to New York
Really though, does anyone even buy CDs anymore? Or is it an old person hobby? Either way, comment on your favorite artists of what I have listed and your favorite song. Or a different artist or group you think I may like. I know a lot of you guys won't like a lot of what I enjoy listening to. It's a fact. But, just take into consideration what I have shown you :D Enjoy today's post of What to Listen To with What to Do.

Focus on Facts: Schule

Get ready for a long post!!
It's helpful though, so read it!! please
Finals are over, and lots o' kiddos had complaints. Like, a lot. Finals can be draining and can be hard to prepare for. I realize that a lot of these child students don't even know how to prepare for such events, especially the new group of Freshmen. Yes, finals are over, but this can still help you with day-to-day school life. With a new year comes resolutions, one of which to raise grades. Hopefully, this list will help with  getting school work done and help with yo studying skills.

 1. Get Off the Technology
"Oh no! Did she just go there?!" Yes, I did. At my house, it is a rule that every week we have No Tech Tuesday and No Tech Tursday (Thursday, we call it 'Tursday'). Every. Week. All my brothers and I aren't allowed on any type of technology, including tablets, computers, television, even my stinkin' iPod (which is just an iPod classic, NOT touch screen!); unless we have homework. But, I will say, I do benefit greatly from it. "What, no Internet for two days a week?! And you 'benefit'??" Actually, yeah, it is extremely beneficial. I don't have Instagram and Blogger to distract me from what I'm supposed to be doing: homework. I can honestly say that I am glad, for the most part, that we have that rule in place. Yesterday, I actually did all of my homework, and then some (I worked ahead). Usually, and I know that this is bad, I just do my homework in the mornings in the library, or I do it during lunch in the library. And then I eat lunch in 5th hour. Not a good habit guys and gals, don't follow my old path (wait, I still do that...) Anyhow, Tuesdays and Thursdays allow me to actually do my homework without any distractions. Setting a day of the week you usually have a heavy work load to stay off of any type of electric device can really boost your homework-turn-in status. And you grades could benefit, of course.
For most people, having a distraction like a cellphone and whatnot reduces their focus on the task at hand. Getting your homework done should be your number one priority, but notifications from your phone can break that focus.

2. Plan Ahead, yo
Most of us receive student planners at the beginning of the year, and I really suggest you to use it!! If you didn't get one when school started, it's not too late! You can pick one up from really any store (Target, Office Max), but make sure that it has hourly scheduling for each of your classes. I'm pretty sure they have ones specifically for school, too. Just check it out! I find planners to be extremely helpful in keeping track of what classes I have homework in. Before I really started using my planner, I would literally forget  which classes I had homework in. I know, sad right? But now I can just look at what I have written down and bang! There's my  homework assignments for the night! And, to keep track of which day I'm on in the planner, I fold the edge of each day, so all the days that have passed have folded corners. I looks pretty cool, too. The whole planner thing kinda leads to my next little sub-subject: check lists.
  • Check It Off- I dunno about you people, but checking things off of a list can be satisfying to me. Just knowing that I completed that task makes me feel somewhat accomplished in a little way. It might work for you, making a check list of things you want to complete that day. What I do is I check the homework pieces I complete in my planner so I know I already did them. And, so I can feel goodly about myself. It's prolly just me, but I feel so accomplished when I can check something off of a list.
3. Divided We Fall
Actually, in this case, division should help. Keep your subjects separate from each other in one large binder with divider inserts. Doing this will help with organization and help you to be less overwhelmed when doing homework. When the time comes to do homework, it will be easy to find where the homework is. Put the binder dividers in order of your classes, at least that's what I do. I also have individual notebooks for each class; this keeps each one separate and again helps with organization. Honestly, I'm not really a fan of the five subject notebooks, but that is just a personal preference. Clutter won't be so craycray and homework won't seem so crazy to do. This one is simply keeping each of your subjects separated from the other will be helpful, yo.

4. Don't Have Time? Make Time
This one may seem obvious, but you actually need to think about it. Setting time aside for studying is an important way to make sure you actually do your studying. Having a set time for each day (or however often you may study) will make it a habit and yourself will actually be ready and revving to study.
I'll be honest, I rarely study. I haven't had a hardcore, more than looking over my notebook before bed study session since those vocab quizzes in elementary school. Yeah, practice what you preach, but I have been trying, by listening to my own advice. Whenever I have a test coming up, I plan on having a time specifically for studying for that test. Trying to get that schedule set up everyday can be sacrificial, but it is definitely worth it when your report card still has its straight A's.
If you are in marching/pep band (or a school sport), you understand the struggle of arriving home late and scrambling to get homework done to then eat then shower, and by then you are so worn that studying is the last thing to pass your mind. During marching season, I tell you I studied absolutely zero times and barely even tried to do my homework at home. Psh, homework, more like the morning it's due library-work. Yeah, that's better sounding. So, if a little spare time somehow exists, it's obvious it won't be used for studying. During that time of heavy after school activity, I don't really have any advice other than, in the mornings, to do a quick five minute study over your next test.

5. Take Notes
When watching a video or listening to a lecture, take notes! Yes, even if the teacher doesn't tell you to, it is important to write things down. Have visual and audio memories of the facts will help you remember facts better, especially if you had written them down yourself. Just writing them down, not even looking back at them, will help you remember those facts a whole lot better. I find notes very helpful, especially when they are organized. When I take notes, I keep them consistent. For me, I highlight all new vocabulary in yellow highlighter, followed by the definition. Any list title is underlined with blue and chart titles with orange. And, to separate each new note session, each note-section title is underlined with pink and put in this format- Notes: Title date. Keeping each section separate and with a title will help you find what you are looking for to study easier and will help reviewing. Organized notes are a must when it comes to high school. I hate borrowing notes from people and finding that they are jumbled messes of each class and far from review-able. If you have one resolution for school this year, make it to keep organized notes.

I really hope that this post helped at least a bit in some way or form. Sorry for its length, but I felt it necessary to have quite a bunch on school. If you want more details on my note taking methods, I could post more on that. I know that they work for me, and it could possible work for any of you guys or gals. Or, if there is a completely different topic you would want me to cover, just hit me up in the comments or by email.
